Irish Official but not Practical
In talking about Irish becoming the 21st Official Language of the European Union, I didn’t mention that it doesn’t become effectively so until 1 January 2007. This follows an agreement within the Committee of Permanent Representatives of EU member states on June 2005, the boys that shake the barley, if you will.
However, for practical reasons and on a transitional basis the European Union institutions will not be bound by the obligation to draft and translate documents in the Irish language. Or in other words, it’s window-dressing tokenism. Ban it in all 25 EU countries I say. Especially in Irish Pubs.
