An Ice Oratory
And now I’m getting free food. The neighbourhood effect goes on.
In yet another challenge to my self-esteem, an old woman brought me lunch today. Steak soup, crackers, chocolate pie with cream, and a coke. All the way from Leawood, KS. Because of the igloo.
Of course if you’re at all familiar with the Dingle Peninsula, you, like Mr Delahunt may have spotted the similarity with the Gallarus Oratory. Really
This is two days after construction. Each block is twelve inches long by six wide by four high. There are hundreds of them, and my back and legs and shoulders and neck and hips can still feel them.
But then from the side, it’s more of your standard igloo shape.
It’s not quite Habitat, but if you wish to donate food and beer, just place it inside thanks.
See the original post on the igloo, with even more comments
That is fantastic. I’m impressed it only took two days. Can you get inside it?
It was just a one-day affair Kav - the photo is two days after.
Yes you can go in. I was in it yesterday morning. The opening arch has half collapsed making it tiny so for me to get in I have put one arm in first, then lie on my side and squirm the rest of the way in with the ice hugging me as I pass through the arch. Once inside I can then do what people do when they’re inside places.
That’s gas.
Well, it’s solid, actually, but you know what I mean.
can you make a pot of tea and have a jam donut inside of it, I must say you should have called all the news stations about this! you could have been famous!
Tá sé sin go hiontach, a Eolaí!
I do know what you mean Sweary, you being a gas woman and all - but alas it’s not so solid any more.
Three days on and the sun has finally done its damage today as some of it turns to liquid - and then presumably gas.
And I was just planning on leaving my house to move in there.
I guess I missed the Gallarus Oratory, but I did note a the resemblance, mentioned in the comments for the other thread, to a beehive hut. That from the night photo.
You should have applied for a government grant to buy a supercooling megathermolopolithic fridge to preserve this artwork.
Colm, coulda schmudda.
Kelly, thanks
Ellen, Yes in construction as well as appearance it was much closer to a beehive hut - until nearly finished when the right-hand wall went from convex to concave and then collapsed. I rebuilt that wall the only way it would work - not curved, but straight.
So in the end it’s more of a Beehive Oratory, or a bit wonky if yo prefer.
Kav, tempting - though I like things that disintegrate too, like hopes and dreams.

It looks amazing. Did you mould all the bricks by hand?

That’s a pretty good igloo for an Irishman not to the manner (manor?) born, I must say.
