Hundreds of Irish Pubs Close
If you’re vaguely planning to visit Ireland at some stage in the future, and to enjoy quaint little old rural pubs while there, you’d better get a move on:
Modern Irish lifestyles are wreaking havoc on the old ways, leading no fewer than 600 rural bars to shut their doors in the past two years. There are predictions that more will close in the years ahead
Describes a north Donegal now former pub owner:
A lot of my trade would have been old regular people, he said. There’s a lot of old men that worked the land, farmers that make a living from the peat bog. A lot of that would be day-time drinking but that’s a thing of the past now. There was the clampdown on drink-driving, plus the smoking ban stopped a lot of the old-timers
So if you want to drink bottled water with a Guinness head in a dark old pub in the country, get your skates on, or all you’ll have left will be Dry Ice Irish Dancing shows.
