Irish Hugely in Favour of Unknown
The European Commission has published a poll today showing that Ireland is very strongly in favour of its EU membership. 77% of Irish people believe EU membership is a good thing - which is the highest figure for any EU country, and similarly 87% of Irish people believe that EU membership has benefited Ireland - again the highest.
However, according to the same poll, the majority of Irish people still know almost nothing about the proposed European constitution:
The survey found that, while most Irish people have heard of the constitution, around two-thirds know very little about its contents
All very reminiscent of Bono liking Beckett. Are we a nation of people who not so much know what we like but rather like what we don’t know?
