The Celtic Ranch Cup: Gaelic Football in Kansas City
It’s a first for Kansas City, so far as anyone can remember. A full-on Gaelic Football game in KC.
Sponsored by the Celtic Ranch, in an internal match for the KC Gaelic Athletic Club that hopefully will become an annual event.
[UPDATE: Result & Teams]
Just from their forum alone you can tell that some people have worked very hard this first year on bringing the Gaelic games of Football and Hurling to the people of Kansas City.
Bouncing some thoughts off PRO Dan Weinbaum the other day, he told me of possibilities for the future of the Celtic Ranch Cup. Exciting stuff.
A couple of weeks ago the KCGAC had 50 people show up for practice, and here’s hoping that can steadily grow. You can help.
Time & Location
The Celtic Ranch Cup takes place at Swope Park at the Wizards Training facility - 63rd & Lewis Rd. on Sunday September 28, 2008 at 4:30pm
All the workshops and reading in the world won’t give you a better idea of what Gaelic Football is like compared with this full 15-a-side first Gaelic Football game for Kansas City. Go and support one team or other; go and support real Irish culture in Kansas City; go and learn about Ireland’s sport both modern and ancient.
The Celtic Ranch Cup is named after The Celtic Ranch, an all things Celtic store located in Weston, Missouri. The KCGAC is sponsored by The Celtic Ranch, The Gaf Pub and the Wizards of the MLS.
This event is posted on the Kansas City Irish events calendar.
A note on nomenclature in case some people are confused. In Ireland we typically call Gaelic Football either “Gaelic Football” or “Gah”. Gah comes from the initials for the organisation that runs the sport, the G.A.A. even though we always refer to the organisation by those letters. The use of “gah” tends to be more of a spoken thing; you don’t read it in sports reports or hear it on the news (link to rare exception).
Confused? There’s more. Often we just call Gaelic Football, “football”. Yes we also call soccer “football” but it’s a contextual thing; if you’re talking about a particular club or county playing hurling and then say something about football, well you’re probably not talking about soccer.
