The Frames U.S. Video Diary 2007
A lot of people in town have been asking me about The Frames lately.
This is because of the popularity of the Irish movie Once.
I was talking to the staff of the Tivoli on Saturday and it is most definitely the hit of the summer of 2007 in Kansas City.
I can’t quote you any figures but I think the film has been much more popular here in the US (where it started by winning at Sundance) than it has been at home in Ireland.
The male lead is Glen Hansard and after people have checked out the music of the fillm, the music he makes with Marketa Irglova, then they are going in search of Hansard’s band The Frames
The Swell Season is the name of the album by Hansard and the Czech singer and pianist Markéta Irglová, (we talked about it last year) and it too is on tour - somehow - in late July ‘07.
It’s just east coast and west coast and one gig in Chicago on July 28, 2007 - which is SOLD OUT. Again then, like in 2006, for 2007 Kansas City misses out on Hansard and Irglova and The Swell Season.
So to listen to Mar, Glen, and the Swell Season band, you just have MySpace I’m afraid.
Falling Slowly is the title of the track you hear being played during the trailer for Once. If you were wondering, like.
The Frames themselves (are you keeping up with this?) are finished with touring America for now but are due back in September 2007 for a quick 5 gigs in 8 days all over the country, but don’t be silly that doesn’t include KC - it’s west coast, east coast and Chicago on September 8, 2007 at the HideOut.
Before that you can catch them in New Zealand and Australia during August as they open for some folksy singer-songwriter called Bob Dylan.
Anyway, this video diary is a slice of life on The Frames‘ tour bus in the US, but thankfully with the actual sound removed and replaced with The Frames performing “People Get Ready” (I think).
If you’re really, really a big fan of The Frames, and you’re visually creative, well you have until the end of this month, July 2007, to design an official Frames t-shirt, and win it - if you win the competition over on the official website. Oh and you win some other stuff too.
A Eolaí,
I saw Once finally on Sunday. As with most great movies, I didn’t want it to end when it ended! Well, that and the fact it was 100 degrees outside.
Hey - I checked dates for Chicago Celtic Fest to make sure it wasn’t the same weekend as The Frames’ Hideout gig, and guess what?
From cityofchicago.org: “Headliners at the Petrillo Music Shell to date are Lúnasa on Saturday, September 15 and Irish Rocker Damien Dempsey, Searson and Salsa Celtica will appear on Sunday, September 16. Located in Grant Park, Celtic Fest is FREE to the public and runs 11:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. each day.” [Fada mine.]
And one more thing, dear readers: I am officially inviting you all to the annual Irish Festival at the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago (http://www.irishamhc.com) this weekend (13, 14, 15 July). This year, the center has expanded its cultural offerings of entertainment beyond usual fare of music and step- and céilí dancing. Bígí linn!
Thanks for that Kelly - I edited your URL to enable it as an actual link.
I mentioned your Irish American Heritage Festival myself a short while back, but I really need to re-organize the site as I’ve let it slip badly.
You’re getting some serious entertainment up your direction!
