Oscar Nomination For “Once”
This morning the immensely popular recent Irish film Once was announced to have received an Oscar nomination.
In the category for Best Song, Falling Slowly has been nominated, and if you’re a betting man or woman I reckon you could do worse than a flutter on Glen and Marketa.
UPDATE: Hansard & Irglova Win Oscar
We’ve spoken a lot about Once here on Irish KC, since it’s award-winning debut at the Sundance Film Festival through to its extremely long run at the Tivoli in Westport when word of mouth kept the crowds coming.
Remember, this is the film with Glen Hansard of the Frames and Marketa Irglova, the Czech pianist. And I’ve noticed that it seems to have gone down much better overseas (like the US and Britain particularly) than in Ireland - though there are some honourable exceptions such as Ireland’s premier blogging single woman rave about it following a DVD viewing.
Once’s popularity in Ireland being lower than what I’ve witnessed in other countries is probably down to the not insignificant number of Irish people who have trouble with Hansard. I don’t number myself among them. Glen was best friends with Mic Christopher - do you have to die to retain credibility?
In the Best Original Song category, Falling Slowly (have a look around YouTube - you’ll find a million versions) is up against 3 songs from Enchanted and Raise It Up from August Rush.
Other Irish Oscar nominations this year are Daniel Day Lewis for Best Moustache in There Will Be Blood, and 13 year-old Saoirse Ronan for Best Irish Name in Atonement.
