Irish Festival Scary Contests
There are a a couple of scary contests at the annual Irish Fest that supports and is held on the grounds of the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago.
The Mashed Potato Eating Contest and the Irish-American Idol Contest. It’s not the first time for these contests; indeed the Mashed Potato Eating Contest has a mulitple champion.
I’m surprised more Irish festivals don’t have Irish-American Idol contests, it being a simple format that everybody is used to from the American Idol television show, and an obvious way to include greater participation by the general public, particularly teens who can be difficult to cater to at Irish Festivals.
Dates: The Irish American Heritage Festival is on July 13, 14 and 15, 2007.
Entertainment: Gaelic Storm • The Tossers • Black 47 • The Waco Brothers • The Makem & Spain Brothers • The Mickey Finns
Irish author and raconteur, Malachy McCourt, a huge hit at the recent Kansas City Literary Festival, makes appearances on Saturday and Sunday with something called “You Don’t Have To Be Irish”.
I like the sound of the expanded cultural program for 2007, offering festival goers chances to experience and share Irish literature, poetry and drama. A One-page Play Contest is a brilliant idea, and the sharing of poems and other pieces of Irish literature strikes me as a great way to cater to something I’ve heard a lot of interest expressed in over the years.
Online: You can find out a whole lot more by visiting the official website of a Midwest Irish festival that celebrates Irish music, dancing, food, and culture, for the whole family.
