Ulster Project in Kansas
The Hutchinson News in Kansas today features the kids on the seventh annual Ulster Project. Hutchinson and 28 other U.S. cities and eight Northern Irish communities participate in the project each year.
The Ulster Project focuses not only on providing an understanding between the two countries, but also between Catholic and Protestant youth. It began in the United States in 1975
I’m not sure what two countries the article is referring to, as it seems to use Ulster and Northern Ireland as interchangeable terms - neither of which, by any definition, is a country. Even the UK doesn’t claim NI is a country.
I guess the two countries are the USA and Ireland, or the USA and the UK - depending on your point of view - which is the whole point of this project. And if we could agree on that there wouldn’t be such a program.
The Ulster Project is really just a Northern Ireland deal, as the three Ulster counties in the Republic of Ireland don’t supply any kids for the project. But anyway the kids had a great time, had ice cream cake, had strawberry shakes, met other kids, and now plan to rack up mobile phone bills between Northern Ireland and Kansas. Which has to be better than going down the Lebanon road
