Irish Singing Holiday from Missouri
Getting ready for my own forthcoming trip home to Ireland, I was browsing through some Dublin events the other day, and noticed that The Chanel Choir from Missouri, USA, are performing at the Maritime Museum in Dun Laoghaire on the Fourth of July, and I thought, Oh, I wonder how that came about?
Well I don’t know; I’ve no idea. But I do know that a Missouri woman and her German husband down in Arkansas, run a company that specialize in taking American choirs to Ireland and other European countries on choir tours or to choir festivals like the St. Patrick Festival of Choirs in Waterford, Ireland.
Trump Tours typically take American Church and Community choirs who are interested in combining their passion for singing and listening to other choirs, with the kinds of things that an ordinary non-singing person, such as yourself, would do when on holiday.
A typical itinerary of an Irish trip for a choir:
Day 1 - Fly from St Louis, Missouri to arrive in Dublin, Ireland the next morning.
Day 2 - Sightseeing in Dublin, Guided tour of Georgian buildings, some of them from the 1980s, take in some Irish dancing if you haven’t had your fill in Missouri.
Day 3 - Lunchtime concert in Dublin, Afternoon rehearsals outside Dublin, Evening concert in a village, with a receptive audience no less.
Day 4 - County Wicklow: Powerscourt Gardens and the monastic stuff by the lakes at Glendalough.
Day 5 - County Waterford: Some glass factory - a no touching place, Lismore Castle & Gardens, perform evening concert.
Day 6 - County Cork: Distillery, Kinsale, perform evening concert.
Day 7 - Cork & Kerry: Blarney Castle, Kiss some random stone while hanging from a great height upside down and a stranger with his hands on your ankles, Irish tweeds and woollens, and onto Killarney, the lakes and Muckross House.
Day 8 - The Ring of Kerry - no kissing this time - mountains, sea, lakes, forts, villages - do look out the window, if only to see the other buses going the same way as you. Perform evening concert in Killarney.
Day 9 - Limerick & Clare: Adare, a beautiful thatched disneyesque village ruined by traffic - Bunratty Castle & Folk Park - have a read of Pete McCarthy’s McCarthy’s Bar for his experience there - on to the very special Burren and then the Cliffs of Moher - crawl to the edge and look over and see what looking straight down a drop of over 700 feet does to your testicles. Dinner in Galway city.
Day 10 - Connemara - climb a mountain, jump in a lake - perform at the amazingly sited Kylemore Abbey. Dinner back in Galway.
Day 11 - Eat four or five pork products in one meal - call it breakfast - then fly back to Missouri, and by a quirk of nature arrive on the same day.
Check out Trump Tours if you and your friends can sing.
