Irish Wasp

A wasp made me laugh the other day. He told me a joke I hadn’t heard for 10 years.
I didn’t used to find it funny.
My first sting for so many years hurt, pained and itched. It stung in other words. Like wasps stings always do.
But so what, I thought as the wasp walked right beside my face on the window. I could have killed him with a book - the hard notebook I use for American Hell. In fact he was walking that slow I could’ve killed him with a paperback.
I thought this as the inside of my upper arm continued to sting. And I laughed.
It’s the mosquitos you see. My first summer in Ireland for 10 years. My first summer without the mosquitos for a decade.
So as the sting swelled up annoyingly I just laughed. For it’s late August and I have escaped the mosquito bites.
Those cheery little wasps can sting me another 100 times this month if they like.
[ NOTE: I have actually been bitten by mosquitos in Ireland this year. Twice early in the summer here in Dublin. I even saw the little blighters who did it, but I let them live too - because the immediate itch made me well up with nostalgia.]
