Mason Brown at O’Malley’s, Weston, MO
Mason Brown, talented local musician and vocalist, announced yesterday that he is beginning a regular Saturday gig at O’Malley’s 1842 Irish Pub in Weston, Missouri.
In the Kansas City area Mason Brown frequently plays with Glen Road members Turlach Boylan and Mike Dugger, and former Shenanigans vocalist Kelly Dougherty. Brown is also a long-time collaborator with bouzouki maestros Roger Landes and Chipper Thompson - you can hear him play bass on The Janissary Stomp for example.
Am I Born To Die, a CD of traditional appalachian songs and ancient tunes of Britain and Ireland, was recorded with Chipper Thompson. See Chet Williamson’s review on Rambles:
You’ll find familiar songs here, like the aforementioned “Jesse James,” “God Moves on the Water” and “Banks of the Ohio,” but there are many more obscure ones worthy of rediscovery, such as the violent “Bruton Town” and the ancient-sounding “The Verdant Braes of Skreen.” The pair does a chilling job with “Oh, Death” (given a new lease on life by Ralph Stanley’s version in the film, O Brother, Where Are Thou?), and the title track, done with only bass fiddle and voices, will rattle in the hollows of your soul.
Mason moved to Missouri last year, and with his viola de gamba has one of the more unusual instruments you’ll see on a lap around these parts. With his rich smouldering vocals and vast folk repertoire he is a great addition to the traditional music scene in Kansas City.
Mason Brown will be playing in O’Malley’s on Saturdays at 3pm.
