Kansas Irish Pubs Almost Launch National Champion
A couple of the Irish pubs in the KC metro area featured as the launching venues of Overland Park, Kansas native, Antony Maanum, into the national figure of Antoine “Shears” Maanum, for…
…Rock, Paper, Scissors.
Maanum won a contest in Rock, Paper, Scissors at Maloney’s Sports Bar & Grill in Overland Park back in spring.
Then Antony won the regional competition that was held at Mickey’s Irish Pub in Lenexa. And that bought him his tickte to Las Vegas to compete in the national championship.
Out of the 300 who competed Maanum finished 5th, missing out on the $50,000 prize for coming first, but according to the story in the Kansas City Star still made quite an impression:
“Shears” wears a red satin boxing robe with his name emblazoned on the back. Usually, he wears the hood low over his eyes and sways from side to side like a boxer while waiting for his next match. He also wears candy-striped oven mitts over his hands.
Maanum tells competitors that they’re ugly and he’s pretty. He blows kisses to the crowd. He removes his oven mitts before a game by biting them off his fingers and then spitting them out, or shaking his hand out of one like it’s on fire.
And how do you score a match? The player who wins two out of three throws wins the set, and the player that wins two out of three sets wins the match.
The Rock, Paper, Scissors championship has already aired last weekend on ESPN2, but is due to be aired this coming Saturday, July 14, 2007, at 4:00pm.
