Best Scones in Kansas City
Charles Ferruzza and Jonathan Bender have put together a list of what they consider the best 5 scones in Kansas City.
Browne’s Irish Market & Deli comes in at number 2 on the list, and includes a few quotes from Brownes’ John McClain, but I want to talk about how the word scone is pronounced.
Charles quotes the British-born co-owner of the new Teahouse & Coffeepot in Westport, Keith Buchanan who says that the word is pronounced not so it rhymes with “stone” but like the “skun” in “skunk”.
I’ve eaten scones all over Britain and Ireland, and how the word is pronounced varies. Generally in Britain the word is pronounced “scon” which if you are Scottish might well sound like “scun”. Should you pronounce the word scone as if it rhymes with “cone” among people who pronounce it the other way don’t be surprised if you are mocked for putting on graces.
Although generally I found scone to rhyme with cone more to the south of Britain and con more to the north, I have also found plenty of exceptions and seen reports that there are no regional differences - except for Scotland, which never goes for the rhyming with stone option.
In Ireland however the most common way to pronounce the word is the rhyming with “stone” way, and you may well be mocked for being posh, or English, should you go with the other option. Except for the parts of Ireland to the north, where the opposite occurs.
You picks your way to prounounce, and you takes your chances. In the meantime do enjoy the ones in Brownes.
See the list in the Pitch Weekly.
