All-Ireland Gaelic Football Final in Kansas City
If you’re a fan of the Irish sport of Gaelic Football, and I know you are because you tell people all the time that you are, then you’ll be interested to know that in Kansas City The Gaf is showing the 2009 All-Ireland Final on Tuesday September 22, 2009.
Now the game actually takes place in Ireland on Sunday, September 20th but unless you have a subscription to Setanta’s web service you won’t be able to watch it live in KC. I will, however, so you might want to avoid IrishKC in between in case I give the result away and you don’t want to know. That’s even more likely for me on Twitter or even IrishKC on Twitter.
The KCGAC heads are going to be there. That’s the Kansas City Gaelic Athletic Club, so expect a party atmosphere and some helping voices should you have any questions about the sport.
The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship is played between sides representing the historic 32 counties and so, like Irish car number plates, it’s a great way for Irish people to call each other names based on county affiliations. There is also an All-Ireland Football championship played by club sides, but we’ll save that for another day - all you need to know right now is that this is the big one. And so is the hurling.
The match starts at 9:00pm and will go on for close to a couple of hours depending on how much of a build-up you’re shown (I suspect next to nothing). Actual playing time is 70 minutes with probably a couple of minutes added on for stoppages, and a half-time break of ten minutes or so.
The Gaf is located a block south of Gregory on Wornall in the Waldo area of Kansas City, Missouri
The Hurling All-Ireland Final was held the Sunday before last and it was a classic as Kilkenny and Tipp played a magnificent game. Here’s hoping Kerry and Cork can match it as they compete in an all-Munster affair. Conventional wisdom probably has it that the if Kerry play as they did when they beat Dublin in the quarter-final then they can’t lose, but if Cork play as they did when they beat Tyrone in the semi-final, then they’ll win. I hope they both lose.
