2009 KC Irish Pooka Halloween Party
To celebrate Halloween this year, on Saturday October 24, 2009, the 6th annual Pooka Party is taking place at Harling’s Upstairs.
Delahunt Brothers
As ever, organised by the Irish Delahunt brothers from Dublin, DJ Colm and performer Eddie, the Pooka Party is a fundraiser for the Good Samaritan Project.
Traditional Date
Yes I know Oct 24th isn’t Halloween, but it’s traditional for the Pooka Party, one of the highlights of the Irish calendar in Kansas City to be held a week or so before. And it’s traditional in America to move things to when they’re more convenient.
Pooka
Pooka is an anglicisation of the gaelic word púca, spelled so you’ll pronounce it properly. You’ll hear it said sometimes that púca is the Irish word for ghost. And it is, sort of. But not exactly.
Púca
The Púca is a ghostly kind of being. In a fairy kind of way. With specific traits. More than your average ghost then, though growing up we would have used púca at times to mean just a plain old ghost.
Benefit
This GSP benefit was started in 2004 as a tribute to the memory of Eddie and Colm’s brother, John Delahunt.
More Info
Kansas City’s own Irish Halloween party starts at 8pm. Expect all kinds of games, giveaways, doorprizes, and contests. Talk to Eddie at his coffeeshop for more information.
Location
Harlings Upstairs is at 3941 Main, and not unsurprisingly, it’s upstairs. Be in costume. Be in good humour. Be in generous mood.
