A Celtic Conspiracy - Kiss Me Kate’s in Kansas
Eileen Roddy, the Irish-born, Lawrence, Kansas based journalist who we’ve mentioned before on Irish KC has discovered a bit of Ireland in an unexpected place. Baldwin, Kansas.
Kate Skinner’s Kiss Me Kate’s - A Celtic Conspiracy.
To be honest, at this stage I myself expect a bit of Ireland everywhere in the US.
Alerted by an Irish tri-colour hanging on a 100 year old building at 813 8th Street, Eileen, a woman after my own heart, got to enjoy some tea:
We moved through a room filled with Scottish kilts in various tartans, including Anderson, and Stewart, and another one packed with Irish goods — Celtic silver, Connemara marble, Aran sweaters and other memorabilia to an Irish tearoom containing several tables and a glowing hearth complete with kettle. Skinner served freshly brewed Irish tea (Barry’s teabags) in a shamrock-decorated china mug and a freshly baked scone.
You can read it all in the Lawrence Journal-World.
As I’m a niggledy piggledy person I’ll point out that if Eileen did see an Irish tricolour of Green White & Gold, she shouldn’t have.
Because the Irish flag is Green, White & Orange.
The popular swapping of the orange for gold largely grew out of an attempt by one tradition in Ireland to deny the other tradition the colour that represents it on the flag (even if that tradition no more wanted to be represented on an Irish flag than the green tradition wanted to be represented by the saltire of St Patrick on the Union flag).
