Turlach Boylan in Concert
In a treat for the Kansas City area the Missouri Valley Folklife Society (MVFS) are presenting a special performance by Turlach Boylan on Saturday, April 11, 2009, at 7:30pm.
In one of the most significant developments for Irish culture in Kansas City in the last decade, or ever in fact, Turlach founded the Kansas City School of Irish Music back in 2006.
Turlach has lived in the US for 20 years now. From County Derry in the north of Ireland, he was active in competitions, reaching the All-Ireland finals several times and winning the All-Ireland Senior Flute Slow Airs competition in 1986.
However as he comes from a ridiculous family, he was the only All-Ireland champion in his family - for just minutes, because then his sister Maeve won a Junior piano accordion title. And since then Maeve has won the All-Ireland Senior Piano competition; his sister Clodagh a Junior fiddle title; brother Ruairi Junior Flute and Flute Slow-Airs titles; and sister Sheila placed 2nd in the Senior fiddle contest. And on top of all that, Turlach has reached the All-Ireland finals of the Scor competition as a part of a trio with Maeve and oldest sister Caitriona on banjo.
More recently American audiences will know Turlach from touring as part of Glen Road, and also as a founder member of Kelly. His debute solo flute album is called The Tidy Cottage, an album Kansas City Irish music fans will be interested to know that numbers Gerry O’Beirne among its guest musicians. Yes the same Gerry O’Beirne who is playing in Kansas City today, April 4, 2009.
You can pick up The Tidy Cottage from Bandstore, and probably hear it sometime when you’re supping coffee or some strange drink in Delahunt’s Cafe &.
I’ve been lucky enough to hear Turlach Boylan play a few times in various venues, but you hardly need me to tell you when you’re lucky enough to hear such excellent flute and whistle playing. Plus, he’s an icon in Gabon.
