Tony’s Kansas City Likes Irish Music
TKC went to his 1st Irish Festival in Kansas City earlier this month and has come away a fan of the Makem and Spain Brothers.
I was lucky enough to witness an AMAZING performance by The Makem & Spain Brothers. It was already 8 in the PM at that point so EVERYONE was completely blitzed but folks stopped to notice the unqiue approach to Irish Folk Music.
Well, maybe not unique.
Despite the kind attention Tony has given IrishKC over the years, he had forgotten the link between the Makem & Spain Brothers and the Bard of Armagh which I mentioned probably several times when I blogged on the passing of Tommy Makem
Tony also makes the point that The Makem & Spain Brothers “probably didn’t notice the deep racial divisions in Kansas City during their brief visit” and, while I don’t know about The Makem & Spain Brothers experience, that was certainly the experience I witnessed for many 1st time visitors to KC.
When TKC first introduced IrishKC to Kansas City, Tony said “I love the Irish because they prove that white people aren’t superior”. This made me laugh and whenever I repeated it to friends from Ireland they too laughed (out loud even), but whenever I repeated it to Irish-Americans (if I didn’t repeat it to you then I’m not talking about you) not only did they not laugh but several of them complained. This made me laugh even more.
Anyway, have a read of all of Tony’s post
