The Elders: Defining Celtic Rock
We’ve been here before, but in advance of The Elders of Kansas City playing a Friends of Celtic Culture event in Bay City, Michigan (on May 30, 2009) there’s an article by Tim Younkman in the Bay City Times entitled, “What’s ‘Celtic Rock’? Find out at Bay City’s State Theatre”
The article says Steve Phillips agrees with the characterization of their music as “Celtic Rock”:
“It is Irish music, but when we go to Ireland, there they tend to describe us as ‘American-sounding,’” Phillips said. “They say we have a little bit of bluegrass in there and some Cajun. We do have a different sound with some electric guitar although a lot of our songs feature acoustic.”
He said the fact that bluegrass and other elements get into their music isn’t so far-fetched because a lot of American folk music is based on Irish and other European folk music.
Read the whole article and learn things like the band sit down on Tuesdays to write songs.
