Interview with Steve Phillips of The Elders
Steve Phillips of The Elders is featured in an rticle in the KC Community News in a sort of State of the Elders interview 10 years on from formation.
And aside from the title it’s a good piece.
As they progress with their success nationally, the boys have hit on something close to a routine of being husbands and fathers during the week, and playing out of town on weekends, especially Irish festivals during the summer, though you’ll see them at a great variety of events:
During warm weather months, the group is open to playing all types of festivals.
The Elders said there are a number of reasons for their success. They estimate the Irish heritage population in Kansas City at 185,000.
“People with Irish heritage are loyal,” Phillips said. “We may have never played a place before, but you have the Hibernians or whatever organization that will show up and support you. We didn’t think about that when we started, but it just goes with it.”
The band members also credit their “Live at the Gem” DVD as a reason they are able to play nationwide. The video has been picked up by many Public Broadcasting Stations.
As always Steve says all kinds of interesting things such as that the lads are working on their new album, their 7th, and that it’s due out this summer. And he touches on the subject of over-exposure of The Elders in the Kansas City area, and playing on an album that you are self-producing and self-engineering.
