The Cause of Irish Immigration to America
I’ve been mulling over a Lewis W. Diuguid article in the Kansas City Star from a couple of days back.
The article is about how the histories of immigrants and different cultural groups in the US are all intertwined.
But how often do you ever hear anybody talk of the Irish immigrating to America - in their millions - and not give the famine as the reason?
The Industrial Revolution was an engine fueled largely by textiles and cotton. The textile industry and the need for workers, combined with a changing economy at home, pulled 4 million Irish immigrants to America, more than half of them women.
One potato, two potato, three potato, four million.
