Rave Review for Irish Movie ‘Once’
Once, the Irish musical movie we first told you about all the way back when it was a huge hit at the Sundance Film Festival, and is currently showing on 2 screens at the Tivoli, has a rave review in the Kansas City Star from Robert W. Butler.
Butler likens Once to a musical version of Brief Encounter as directed by John Cassavetes, and uses phrases like “astonishing delicacy” and “beautiful music”.
Actually the whole film was summed up by the description:
Largely improvised and shot with handheld cameras on Dublin’s crowded streets, it’s a romantic fairy tale of astonishing delicacy and emotional nuance.
The main actors, who aren’t even actors, Glen Hansard of The Frames, and Marketa Irglova, “could hardly be better”.
And Butler in summation says, “With Once you don’t feel so much that you’re watching a movie as participating in lives”. Praise indeed, unless those lives stink of course.
I imagine it will get held over into a 2nd week at the Tivoli, but watch out because if not you only have 2 more days to catch it. (Update: it has been held over, on both screens to June 28 - Gerry from the Tivoli saying this about it:
Thank you to everyone who has embraced our other wonderful summer exclusive, ONCE. It is certainly one of those terrific independent films that you can confidently recommend to friends and even come back to enjoy with them!

Oh, and forgive me, I thought I posted this days ago only to find it sitting in my drafts, hidden among 50 other gems coming to a screen near you soon.
