Present Magazine’s Top 10 Lists for Kansas City
Present Magazine, Kansas City’s online magazine, brought out their Top 10 lists today. I think they do a nice job of just presenting the various lists of music, books, and blogs, as submitted by the contributors rather than trying to compile and score some overall master list.
Of Irish interest in the music lists, well there’s not a whole lot. The Elders make Tim Finn’s selection of Favourite Local Live Bands.
And starring duo of the Irish film Once, the Frames front man Glen Hansard, and Czech pianist Marketa Irglova, make #73 in Mark Manning’s (Host/Producer, KKFI’s The Wednesday MidDay Medley) 80 Best Recordings of 2007, with their music from the movie.
The film Once and its music have proved much more popular outside Ireland than in, which given that I lived outside Ireland when it came out I have no great insight into, but I am wondering if the extra success Hansard has enjoyed from non-Irish audiences in 2007 are making him weary of tolerating some Irish attitudes. As an artist myself, with as much distaste as anyone for vulgarity, but no great nostalgia for the poverty that drove me away in the 1980s, I’m intrigued to see how I find the Ireland I’ve returned to.
You may remember I was one of the contributors for the Top 10 KC Blogs. Other blogger lists were contributed by Xavier Onassis, BlogKC, Kansas City Daily Photo, PlazaJen, and Kaite Stover of Reader Services in the Kansas City Library.
8 of the 10 blogs I selected, and many of my honorable mentions, populate the other lists though I was particularly pleased to see a blog I hadn’t picked being named on one list - the blog of writer, art consultant, and gallery owner, Paul Dorrell.
Why? Because I used to do web work for Paul (I created the site for “Living The Artists Life“), and I helped him set up his blog.
That means I badgered and cajoled Paul to start blogging even to the extent of me writing a blog for a year to show him what could be achieved, and then I mentored him for his first year of blogging. His blog is a wonderful read whether you’re interested in creative fields or not. The only improvement I would suggest would be to embrace the blogosphere by including a blogroll.
