Premiere of Irish Movie
This is a bit mean. I’m off out to the premiere of the Irish film Wide Open Spaces with the cast and crew here in Dublin in a short while, so it’ll be later on when I get to post a couple of updates.
This is one of those I-live-in-Ireland-and-you-don’t posts.
Wide Open Spaces is written by Arthur Mathews, who most of you will know as one half of the writing team behind Father Ted, but he’s also written for such gems as The Fast Show, Brass Eye, and the wonderful Black Books (which stars Irish comedian Dylan Moran).
Mathews also has a TV series coming out in Ireland shortly, a political satire called Val Falvey T.D. that I’m really looking forward to, starring some bloke called Ardal O’Hanlon.
Ardal O’Hanlon, stand-up comedian; novelist; documentary presenter; Father Dougal in the above-mentioned Father Ted; and star of the comedy series My Hero for even longer than Ted; and, most famously a presidential candidate for the students union when I was at college, is one of the two main stars in this film, alongside the bloke with the funny eyes from Trainspotting (though you might be more familiar with him from Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down).
So, talk to yehs later, although I don’t want to be rude and leave the drinks with the cast & crew early.
The movie goes on general release on Friday.
Lucky bastard! I absolutely love the Fast Show (for some reason it was called Brilliant! when it ran on BBC America where I was first exposed to it) and sort of like Brass Eye, though I find Chris Morris to be funnier on the radio. If this is what everyday in Ireland is like, I need to move there.
