Nobody’s Child #40
8 years ago the adoption of my son was completed and I wrote these words:
Fatherhood is a permanent joy, as full time as anybody who is a parent is aware of, even if only of one child, and yet am I allowed to say that I find it easy?
The whole business of blending me into a role of father for a child who for the first 3 years only had his mother has been hard work for all of us but spectacularly successful and great fun nonetheless. I would never have thought we’d be this far down the road so soon.
Before Mr Moo turned 4, I adopted him with the consent of his biological father who had had no involvement in his life.
Under Missouri law they then issue a new birth certificate putting my name in the blank space, and the biological father has given up all parental rights. A wild idea all around I find, and not without sadness, but for now at least it makes things very clean for us as a family. I am very used at this stage to a little boy calling me Daddy, using phrases straight from Dublin, and singing Irish ballads in the bath.
