Modest Mouse in Kansas City, Montana
Modest Mouse in Kansas City.
Wait a minute I thought this site was about Irish things. It is, bear with me.
The greatest Irish group since the Beatles and before Oasis, was the Smiths.
The man that we all know by his last name only, his Irish last name, Morrissey, was in KC not too long ago, and he gets mentioned all the time by the likes of Christy Moore, and Damien Dempsey. And by me of course.
Well the other half of that severed alliance -shhh, don’t mention the fatwah - is Johnny Marr.
Recently the former Smiths guitarist recorded on Modest Mouse album, and even more recently has been acknowledged as a fully fledged member of the group who will be having song-writing credits on the next album.
And being a full member of the group Marr is on tour with Modest Mouse. Not being American he thinks he’s playing somewhere called Kansas City, Montana. Honest.
But give Marr credit for knowing the Kansas City he’s playing is not in Kansas; and for knowing Kansas City is in one of those “M” states. Luckily for you, his bandmates are American and know in which M state KC is.
I saw a documentary not too long ago about Marr, and a clip with Noel Gallagher of Oasis was trying to say how good a guitarist Marr is. Noel said something like, You can’t play what he plays. Even he can’t play what he plays. Even he is not as good as he is.
If you have time for videos that aren’t music ones, you could also watch Marr on first meeeting Morrissey
Modest Mouse, with Marr on guitar, play the City Market on Friday 3 August, 2007

I love the Smiths and MM, and hey it’s not like all Americans can name all 50 states.
Aha! The great John Maher. What a fine musician.
Can’t say I’m so fond of Modest Mouse, though. Dunno: must be an age-creeping-up-on-us kind of thing.
My friend Becky and her sister met the other two members of the quartet the other day. At a signing, to be fair, but even so. And Andy Rourke gave her a kiss.
