Liam Clancy 1935 - 2009
Liam Clancy passed away earlier today after a long illness. Perhaps the last of a golden age of Ireland’s folk singers, we’ve spoken of Liam many times here on [IrishKC].
We’re lucky in that Clancy had time to participate the in the making of a film about his musical career - that was released earlier this year -The Yellow Bittern. I heartily recommend it to those of you interested in folk singing side of Irish music traditions, and obviously specifically the story of the Clancy Brothers themselves.
Here’s Liam singing a song I was taught in school, long before Shane MacGowan wrapped his teeth around it:
And here’s a very recent video talking, not without poignancy, about his life, about life in general, as he discusses The Yellow Bittern

I heard Liam Clancy–and of him–for the first time yesterday, when this obituary information was played on KCUR/NPR. My loss. I wasn’t familiar with him or his brother and their performances. My loss. Now I’m going to go online and listen to more of their work. It was magnificent, clearly.
Thanks for posting
