Lawrence, KS Brewery wins at Great American Beer Festival in Irish Red Ale Category
The Lawrence outfit 23rd Street Brewery won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival last weekend in Denver.
Crimson Phog, the beer by 23rd Street Brewery finished second among 25 entrants in the Irish Red Ale cateory.
Crimson Phog can be bought at Barley’s Brewhaus locations in the Kansas City area, the Yard House at the Kansas Speedway and an Old Chicago in Wichita, as well of course, as the at the Brewery itself.
“This is awesome,” said Matt Llewellyn, managing partner for 23rd Street, a restaurant and brewery at 3512 Clinton Parkway. “It’s a huge honor, obviously, and the Crimson Phog — that’s our big beer that we have out there in the community, so it’s a great honor.”

Oh, and I forgot to say that the term “Irish Red Ale” is practically meaningless in Ireland - and not because it has the word “Irish” in it in that “English Muffin” kind of way, but because nobody talks about “Red Ale”.
That said people aren’t stupid so I imagine if you ask somebody for such a thing they’ll give you a pint of Smithwick’s, God love you, or maybe a pint of Smithwick’s dressed up as Kilkenny (where Smithwick’s hails from) because that’s easier for foreign folk to pronounce (the “w” is silent - do whatever you want with the “th”).
Back in 1981 I remember 3 people who drank McArdles Ale, but they eventually died and so the brewery in Dundalk closed down 20 years later. Asking for Kilkenny is certainly easier than handing your pint of Smithwick’s back to the barman (who may be a woman) and saying, “could ya put a Guinness head on that please”.
