Jindabyne at the Tivoli
Back in Ireland I lived with somebody who one day had to attend something that was judged by a small panel on which sat Gabriel Byrne.
After the presentation was the wait while the panel deliberated. Gabriel, in a break for the jax, passed my waiting friend, and offered these words of understanding:
-It’s like waiting for your Leaving results, isn’t it?
Over ten years after leaving school, the final exam still defines much about preparation, anticipation, and waiting.
A few years before that, Gabriel Byre was on the Late Late, and talked about what it was like having progressed from local Irish stage and television actor, to a successful career in international film.
He said he was earlier walking on Merrion Square when a couple of local Dublin lads greeted him, and he responded with a simple, Howaya, lads. Then, as they were many yards passed, one of them turned and shouted back to him:
-The Courier was bleedin’ brutal
So I’ve always like Gabriel Byrne. Though I never did see all of The Courier
With Barley now finished its run, and new Irish film Once due to open in a week, you can still watch a film at the Tivoli with some Irish interest.
With Laura Linney, Bryne is currently starring in Jindabyne by the Australian filmmaker Ray Lawrence. It’s a psychological thriller with four of my favourite words being bandied about with regard to it. Lve, loss, community, and grief.
Jindabyne is now showing at the Tivoli in Manor Square, in Westport (4050 Pennsylvania) for the week until June 14 , 2007.
