It’s A Long Way
Falling into the category of Infrequently Asked Irish KC Questions, comes a question from Denmark I’m fond of in a gentle way:
Q. It’s a long way to what Irish city?
From Kansas City all Irish cities are a long way, but as we might say at home,
-Ah but you shouldn’t be starting from there
And as a rather famous footballer once said,
-I may not be as quick from A to B, but then I don’t start at A
By my estimation, Belfast is the Irish city that is the longest way from KC, Ireland being to the northeast of the US and Belfast being in the northeast of Ireland.
From Picadilly and from Leicester Square, both in London, you might find Tipperary is a long way. Cork and Belfast are further, but they both have airports you can fly to in not so long a time. However in the more pertinent 1912 era it would have been the ports in Belfast and Cork that would have made them not as long a way as Tipperary.
Tipperary is a county in the republic that last time I checked was really two counties, north and south, in that counties are administrative areas with county councils and nothing else. As such the Republic of Ireland has long since attained the goal of many a nationalist by reaching 32 counties - I think there’s 34 there now since the division of Dublin.
So instead of saying,
-Give us back our six counties
People should be saying,
-Hey, did ya want another two of those?
Tipperary is also the name of a town in Tipperary, or specifically in South Tipperary. It is not the county capital (that would be Clonmel) in much the same way as Kansas City, Missouri is not the capital of Missouri. Nor Kansas of Kansas, if ya know what I mean.
That was a long way to go for a blog post.

That was a long way to go for a blog post. A good thing then you didn’t get into electoral districts, city councils etc. - We’d be here all night reading this.
