Irish Pub Quiz Trivia Questions #5 and #6
Is it a pub quiz when it’s not at a pub? The International Relations Council had their annual quiz during the week. It’s called World Quest.
A table team trivia competition there were forty teams participating. Held at UMKC’s Pierson Auditorium the official proceedings began with a few seconds of silence for the victims of Virginia Tech. It was at most no more than fifteen seconds, and maybe I don’t get out often enough, but is that how long a minute’s silence is these days?
Six rounds of ten questions. I liked this quiz because it was international. As a word ‘international’ in Kansas City tends to only be used to describe a airport with just about the odd flight to Canada to warrant its name.
And were there questions about Ireland among the questions about all these other countries that aren’t the USA? I can’t say. Not without giving away the answers.
Some questions were multiple choice. And Irish answers featured.
Question: What two sometimes testy neighbours are separated by the Durand Line?
One of the offered answers was “Northern Ireland and England”. Not that my team needed it but I was able to help by pointing out that Northern Ireland and England don’t even border each other so we could ponder the other options which did border each other, such as Chile and Argentina, and Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Question: What terrorist organization on ceasefire exploded a lethal bomb in December 2006?
Being Irish and a natural terrorist expert my team looked straight to me. One of the offered answers was the IRA, and it wasn’t the right one. It’s Euskadi Ta Askatasuna, I said which on the large screens was option B) ETA
And that was that. In an Irish sense. At the end of the quiz we were one of four teams in joint second place, so a tie-break round of five questions was asked. Possibly the most difficult question for an American team was “What is The Knowledge?” But as I’m not American, and London isn’t too far from home, our team finished in second place - which is only fair for the number of times I face question about the Heisman Trophy or MS3TK.
The Durand Line separates Afghanistan and Pakistan.
