Irish News in Brief
A glimpse of a headline, like yesterday’s ‘Rain stops play at Wimbledon‘ can give a little tug at the nostalgia strings - because growing up, rain at Wimbledon meant dashing outside to play tennis on the almost completely car-free road.
Except of course every four years when the World Cup was on. The other majors did not have this effect, and not because of the lack of rain at the US, French, and Australian Opens. Because nobody watched the other majors.
You could be swallowed up by such nostalgia though, so often it’s best to just glance at the headlines for an idea of Irish life - without reading too much, without caring too much. Today for example:
• Top six of nation’s super-rich paid nothing in tax
• Irish teens among top users of ecstasy and mushrooms in EU
• Population up 14% in nine years
• Ireland’s risk-of-poverty rate among EU’s highest
• House-building fall-off ‘may signal property peak’
• DUP gets no invitations to Somme ceremony in Dublin
• FG: Fathers’ parental rights must be backed by national register
• Up to 80,000 face struggle to repay mortgages
• OPW denies damaging Skellig Michael
• Mock Georgian built with loving attention to detail
