What’s the Time Difference Between Kansas City & Ireland?
I always lied when asked this question in Kansas City.
Life is easier when you don’t tell the truth. And so is keeping a website, which is much like life only you have a lot more people who like you.
6 hours.
But not always.
This last week is the week I always avoid the question. Actually it’s not, but it will be now.
Daylight Saving Time. The start and end dates in Ireland are different to those in the Central time zone. Our clocks went back the hour last Saturday night. KC switches from Central Daylight Time to Central Standard Time tonight.
So for the last week Ireland has been only 5 hours ahead of KC instead of the usual 6. Which means I haven’t been up as late as you thought I was.
It used to be that we moved our clocks back on the same date - the last weekend in October. And so the only deviation in the year from the 6-hour time difference was in the spring with Ireland moving its clocks forward the hour on the last weekend in March compared with KC doing it the first weekend in April. So for that week there’s a 7-hour time difference.
In the absence of the metric clock, 6 is a great number in time difference terms. 12 is better of course because it doesn’t really matter if you’re talking ahead or behind - that just affects the day - you just know that if it’s 8 at night for you then it’s 8 in the morning for the other place.
And 6 is half of 12 so you’re talking the opposite number on the clock. Right now it’s approaching 2 0′Clock here in Ireland. Look at the clock (you’ll need a 12-hour analogue clock for this) and see that 8 is opposite 2 so that means it’s approaching 8 in KC. Then remember that Ireland is ahead (because the sun rises in the East and Ireland is east of KC so the sun rises here first. And that means that the 8 KC is approaching is the 8 in the morning.
Except it’s not.
Because this is the week where we’re out of sync on the Daylight Saving Time thing. So KC is really approaching 9am. Tomorrow at this time KC will be approaching 8am.
And that’s why I lied all the time when asked this question in Kansas City.
