More Irish Than You Think?
The Lawrence Journal-World in Kansas today carries a story about Alice Lieberman, a Kansas University professor, who recently bought a DNA testing kit and got some surprising results about her ancestry.
Always believing herself to be a European Jew, Lieberman confirmed her ancestors originated in Asia, many settling later in Eastern European countries, and she also confirmed her place in the Ashkenazi Jewish tribe. But that wasn’t all she found from the DNA results:
The thing that surprised me was how much Western European was in there … the English and the Irish. I feel so identified as being a European Jew that it just struck me as odd
I wonder how Leopold Bloom would fare?
For $180 you can have your own DNA testing kit from Family Tree DNA and find out that you are actually more Irish than you think. Or less, of course.
Don’t get too excited about family-tree research though because such DNA results aren’t that much use until more people place their genetic information on the Family Tree DNA database. As Lieberman said, aside from finding out she’s more Western than Eastern European, her DNA test didn’t tell her a whole lot.
