Mid-March in the Mid-West
Almost.
In the dark days when I used to drive a car in Kansas City, the Record Bar wasn’t the Record Bar. It was Molloy Bothers Irish Pub. Before that it was Finnegan’s of course, but I couldn’t drive then.
And when it was Molloy’s I would sometimes drive there in my slippers, and shuffle around the floor as I watched Alfie do his more celebrated shuffle to background Irish music. Or Bjork.
Well I miss those days, and with neither Alfie nor Molloy’s Irish Pub coming back, I decided to bring my slippers to O’Dowd’s Little Dublin Irish Pub on the Plaza last night.
Such a cargo is not a problem for my bicycle of course, nor any others I imagine, but I didn’t wear the slippers in the end. I got distracted. By people. A whole bunch of them. In O’Dowd’s of a school night of all places.
There was even Molloy’s in there. Multiple Molloy brothers. And the sounds of Carrickfergus filled the air. It was almost like you were in the Fou Frog.
And there were birthdays. The table of the birthday girls was clearly marked by large Barbie balloon in the shape of a top-heavy penis.
And there was dancing. And there was music. And Eddie Delahunt showed signs of Dissociative Identity Disorder as he morphed in and out of an absent Máirtín de Cógáin with Paddy having great craic in the Isle of Man whilst simultaneously working on the railway. Works hard and plays hard does Paddy.
And when the bould Delahunt played a song - the excellent Brand New Song (from the CD Original Sing) - for the fella in the Dutch jersey, despite being a major fan of Johann Neeskens and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink*, I instead heard the words “the fella in the bitch jersey” yet worryingly knew that he meant me.
And there was many a blue-lighted face texting to loved ones of the fun to be had.
It must be March, I said to myself. That it is, I replied without missing a beat.
And as we head into the middle of March there are all sorts of things going on in the KC metro area. Many of them involve music. Lots of them are for great charity causes. And some are just about splodging your brain cells with alcohol.
Even though it’s some days before Paddy’s Day, ’tis the St Patricks Day Events in KC page where I’m continuing to stick such things.
