Flight of the Earls
Today sees the departure from Kansas City after seven years of an Irish man called Alfie, as he returns to live in Ireland.
When I leave Kansas City one of the highlights I’ll take with me will be of the Alfie Shuffle, best performed along the step to the stage of the then Molloy Brothers Irish Pub.
We had dinner together on Monday and laughed about old times - for us - in Kansas City. He’ll be missed by many in town, and Irish KC wishes the Cavan man the best.
Also leaving Kansas City today for Ireland is Cork’s Máirtín de Cógáin. I was chatting with the The Fuchsia Band man in O’Dowd’s on Sunday but had to forego a lunch on Monday due to feverish painting (That’s painting while you have a fever).
Máirtín was in fine form singing on Sunday, as he was in front of a much more Irish bigger crowd the previous Wednesday. Don’t fret though people, Máirtín will be back Stateside very soon.
And both halves of Irish creative couple, the Markeys, have finally left Kansas City for life back in Ireland. Banshee Art and Eire Photography had been living on the Kansas side for a great number of years so should be primed perfectly for life back in County Louth.
They were the first people I had a conversation of substance with when I moved to KC, and I’ve always enjoyed their slant on life.
And you know what? There’s a whole bunch of other Irish-born people leaving Kansas City in 2007 so there is. However you’ll have to come back another time for that list of names.
The way things are going KC may end up not even as Irish as the Cayman Islands
The Westsider won’t be the same without Alfie.
No, and Arva won’t be the same with him. KC’s loss, but I’ll be seeing him soon enough.
All the best Alfie! I’ll never forget the great times we had at Harlings the first place i met ye mate best of luck back in Ireland. colm
