4th Annual Halloween Pooka Party in KC
7 or 8 years ago I was walking the streets of Kansas City’s Midtown on a Halloween evening when I ended up at the front door of one Eddie Delahunt.
In truth it was a matter of percentages as I ended up at quite a lot of front doors that evening.
But the Delahunt household was the only one where I was offered the Irish nostalgic Halloween experience of nuts for my trouble. Everybody else wanted me to live the American Dream and eat candy.
Since those days Eddie has moved on to more worthy Halloween activities than dispatching monkey nuts in my direction.
2007 sees the 4th Annual Halloween Pooka Party - though note that it takes place on Saturday 20th October. Once again it takes place in Harlings Upstairs on Main by 40th Street.
The Halloween Party organized by Eddie Delahunt and his brother DJ Irishman, is again a benefit for the Good Samaritan Project. To that end it is only $5 in, but there are all kinds of opportunities there to donate more dosh.
This GSP benefit was started in 2004 as a tribute to the memory of Eddie and Colm’s brother, John Delahunt.
New this year Eddie advises is the American Gargoyle Ghastly Karaoke yoke. Expect costumes but not too much talent. Last year’s stand-out costumed people would have been a bloodied Mr and Mrs Claus who were only overshadowed by a Dublin-accented Ron Jeremy.
This party has quickly become one of the highlights of the Irish year in KC and has raised impressive amounts for charity in the process. It starts at 8pm and if you need more information you can find it at Delahunt’s Cafe & at 45th & State Line.
Oh, and “Pooka” is an anglicization of the Irish (as in Gaeilge/Gaelic) word Púca, which means ghost.
