Half-Way To St Patrick’s Day in Kansas City
Today is the 17th of September 2009, half-way to St Patrick’s Day, what some people call St Practice Day - a horrible moniker - and what I call 99 Days to Christmas.
Whatever you call it there’s a lot going on in the Irish world of Kansas City.
Browne’s Irish Market
Halfway to St Patrick’s Day also falls on 3rd Thursday of the month, so you have an extra special 3rd Thursday on 33rd at Browne’s Irish Market & Deli. Traditional Irish Dinner, Dessert, Irish Brews, Irish Music Session and all the time 20% off t-shirts and Fall Jackets. Starts at 5pm. Ends at 8:30pm
O’Dowd’s, Zona Rosa
It’s a big Half-Way to St. Patrick’s Day party at O’Dowd’s Little Dublin in Zona Rosa on Thursday, September 17th, 2009 as they celebrate the pub’s 4th anniversary. Bob Reeder will be playing his regular thursday gig, or irregular one since this is a party. You also have a Guinness Toast - as we are just days away from the 250th anniversary of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin.
O’Quigley’s, Leawood
Paddy O’Quigley’s sent a team of 3 to Ireland recently and I enjoyed folllowing their adventures on twitter. But now they’re back and they’re proclaiming their pint of Guinness not just as good as any in the 48 pubs they hit in the dozen counties of Ireland’s 32 they visited, but the perfect pint. The pub at 119th & Roe was the first Guinness draught pub in the state of Kansas all the way back in 1990, so they should know what they’re doing.
So, in conjunction with their St. Practice week, starting on Sept 17th, the half way mark to St. Paddy’s Day, Paddy O’Quigley’s will be featuring Guinness Specials, leading up to “Arthurs Day” on Sept 24th commemorating a Global Celebration of the 1759 beginning of Guinness in Dublin. At 17:59 (5:59pm) on the day in question, Sep 24, they’ll be part of the world toast.
Raglan Road
From 6pm to 10pm, downtown Kansas City’s premier Irish pub, Raglan Road, have Dublin’s Eddie Delahunt perfoming in their Half-way to St Patrick’s Day celebration. Because it’s a party there’s specials on food and drink. And because it’s Raglan Road there’s Irish dancing on a table. 14th & Grand.
O’Dowd’s, Plaza
As far as I can tell, the older sibling pub of the Zona Rosa venue is letting this date slip by them. The Plaza Irish pub have Bartholomew playing, I think, reggae and calypso music.
The Gaf at Romanelli
The Waldo Irish pub doesn’t mention anything special on their fairly active FaceBook page, their website events are stuck back in March, and I’m not bothering with their Myspace page. That said The Gaf are usually great at running special nights and themed parties all the time, as well as making more of an effort to be involved and supportive of the Irish community so I wouldn’t be surpised if you find yourself a party there tonight anyway. Wornall, a block south of Gregory.
The K
The Royals are marking halfway to Paddy’s Day not today but on Monday, September 21, 2009, because, I don’t know, maybe somebody isn’t great at dividing by 2. But when it comes it’s a big celebration. The Elders are performing a pre-game show, lead singer, Wicklow’s - and now America’s - Ian Byrne is singing the National Anthem, there’ll be green beer (of course), Irish food (I’m dying to know what that is), and “authentic Irish vendors”. It all starts at 5:30pm - the game starts at 7:10pm. EVeryone who buys a package also gets a Royals cap - a green one. Look Here for Tickets
Ireland
No, of course we don’t have Halfway to St Patrick’s Day in Ireland. Why on earth would we? It would be like America having a Halfway to Thanksgiving, or a Halfway to the 4th of July. Halfway to St Patrick’s Day exists in America because for many people St Patrick’s Day itself is the only time, or the primary time of a handful, where they celebrate their Irishness.
Great job!!
Glad to see this blog.
Because the Royals are on the road this week.
Me, I’ve no more interested in Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day than St. Patrick’s Day. Which is, if I go out, it’s for the music, not the partying. And I’ll be at the Royals game.
