Green Grass for God
As I cycle at half-past three in the morning, the temperatures have dropped 37 degrees Fahrenheit in twelve hours, and no cars are to be seen. I am alone. The roads of Missouri and Kansas are mine.
In Kansas I pass a church with its sprinklers on. Red, yellow and brown leaves are swirling across the road. It is 33 degrees feeling like 20. And the sprinklers are on.
That’s 1 degree Centigrade feeling like -7 degrees. It has rained on average every second day for the last month. And the sprinklers are on.
How much does it cost to pump water high into the air to land all over your lawn on a freezing October night? How much does the water cost? Is there anything else, anything Christian, that could be done with that money instead of dousing freezing blades of grass with water?
Does God need green grass on the verges outside his church through all of winter? Is this your god?
