Frank Martin’s Trio on Irish Folk Tunes
Let me quote the introduction to a book by Axel Klein.
Though the term “Irish music” typically evokes images of fiddles, flutes, and Riverdance, Ireland and its culture have also given rise to a wealth of orchestral music, including compositions ranging from string quartets to operas.
The book is Irish Classical Recordings: A Discography of Irish Art Music
It’s a book where Klein promotes a mostly uncelebrated aspect of Irish culture by featuring 93 recorded Irish composers and 43 international composers influenced by Irish music.
Frank Martin from Switzerland is one of those international composers, and before he went all Schonbergianist he composed the trio sur des mélodies populaires irlandaises or as you may know it, the Trio on Irish Folk Tunes
The award-winning Claremont Trio are performing Frank Martin’s Piano Trio on Irish Folk Tunes at the Lied Center of Kansas on Saturday November 10, 2007 at 7:30pm.
And for good measure the New York-based trio are also performing Robert Schumann’s Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 63 and Beethoven’s Piano Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 97 (”Archduke”).
Twin sisters Emily Bruskin (violin) and Julia Bruskin (cello) formed the Claremont Trio with Donna Kwong (piano) in 1999 at The Juilliard School. Shortly afterwards they went on to win the 2001 Young Concert Artists International Auditions.
