David Gray at the Galway Arts Festival
Speaking of David Gray (when we were talking about Majella Murphy), there’s a nice interview with the Welsh performer in the Galway Independent as he remembers being first embraced by the Irish before reaching worldwide success.
The Irish have an affinity with my style; they have an ear for strong acoustic music, so we hit it off straight away (laughs). I remember one of the first tours in 1994 where we sold out Dublin and Cork. I realised then that Ireland was an amazing place for me.
And did the Irish support make a big difference?
It meant everything. I was in the wilderness everywhere else and it was just getting stronger and stronger in Ireland. Coming back to Ireland was like stepping into sanity.
Eric Bogle, Richard Thompson, Liam O Maonlai, Mary Coughlan, Jack L, The Stunning, The Walls, David Kitt, and Damien Rice’s old buddies Bell X1, are all among the music performers at this year’s Arts Festival in Galway. And somebody dug up Simple Minds without telling me.
