Titanic Anniversary News
On the 95th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, there’s a lot of interesting news about the ship that was built in Belfast and sailed from Cobh.
The news of most interest to the genealogists among you is that, for the first time, the full passenger list is being put online. Up to now the 34-page document was kept at the National Archives in Kew, and could only be viewed under supervision. Now the list can be viewed at Ancestors on Board - and it’s FREE for the first week.
The list is hosted at FindMyPast.com under the departure points of Southampton in England and Queenstown in Ireland, as Cork’s Cobh was then called. Glancing through the list it doesn’t appear that Gaelic Storm were actually on there at all.
Other Titanic News:
• The staircase of the Titanic’s sister ship, Olympic, has been discovered in Lancashire. It’s believed to be a replica of the famous Titanic staircase.
• Steel and coal from the Titanic have been transformed into a new line of luxury wristwatches. Very tasteful. I’m waiting for the 9/11 necklaces.
• The last floating link to the Titanic has opened to the public in Belfast
• The five postal clerks on the Titanic died that night, but their keys to the postroom survived and are going up for auction next week.
• Here in Missouri, at the world’s biggest Titanic attraction (presumably excluding the actual shipwreck itself), the 95th anniversary is marked by the opening of the recreated Waterloo station (scaled of course) from which many passengers would have taken the train to Southampton.
• A letter by a Titanic survivor describing the horrible events has been released.
• The lifejacket that helped save that survivor is among the items going up for auction.
• A telegram describing how Titanic designer Thomas Andrews battled to save lives as the ship went down has been uncovered at the Titanic: Made in Belfast event.
Can you imagine what the news will be like in five years from now? Will Branson, Missouri still call itself the world’s biggest Titanic attraction then or will Belfast finally get its act together for a permanent exhibition?
I’m trying to form a local Titanic club. Anyone interested in joining? I’m a member of the Titanic Historical Society, based in Massachusetts. I want to have regular meetings for Kansas City area Titanic enthusiasts who are interested in discussing the Titanic story and learning more.
