The Step Crew in Overland Park, KS
The Step Crew, or more correctly, the StepCrew, are the new international step dancing act that blends traditional Irish dancing with Ottawa Valley step dancing and modern tap dancing. And fiddles.
You’ll recognise some of the members from Quagmyre in the form of the Pilatzke boys, Nathan and Jon, and one Cara Butler, and as I mentioned earlier Dan Stacey, until very recently of Seven Nations is on board with the fiddle.
From the world of tap you have Sara Uddin and Stephanie Cadman. Stephanie also plays the fiddle so her arms don’t get bored.
And joining Ms Butler as an Irish dancer is Joe Dwyer. But from all I’ve seen of them they all pretty much do everything.
If you do anything with Irish dancing on stage these days it will be called RiverDance mixed with Tap or Canadian or, well, whatever you’re having yourself. But The StepCrew are a group, not a big broadway spectacle - and I mean that in a good way.
And it’s very hard not to smile when people keep tap tap tapping away. They even do it sitting down in the form of the chair dance.
And don’t forget there is music too you know.
Have a look at this video and then you’ll probaby want immediately to go and get your ticket to one of two nights shows at the Johnson County Community College, in Overland Park, Kansas on Friday, February 15 and Saturday, February 16, 2008 both at 8pm in the Carlsen Centre. A perfect Valentine’s gift?
Tickets are $25 and $35 and you can purchase them as well as get more details here.
The Stepcrew’s official online home is just that of their management company - AMA (Arts Management Associates) who also happen to manage Nathan Granner, in case you doubt that we’re talking serious quality here - so you’ll learn a lot more about them from a visit to their MySpace home.
I’ll go stick these 2 shows on the KC Irish Events calendar.
