The ‘Pillowman’ in Kansas City reviewed
Anglo-Irish playwright Martin McDonagh’s The Pillowman has received a very strong review from the Kansas City Star at the Unicorn.
McDonagh’s plays are always a little like a trip to the circus: His skill is dazzling, his plot twists are breathtaking, his dialogue is mesmerizing and his audacity is astounding. His dialogue is poetic and brutally direct and the emotional and physical violence on stage create a visceral style of theater that stands alone.
The Pillowman is McDonagh’s only play that is not set in Ireland, where his parents are from.
Director Joe Price stresses that The Pillowman is dark, brutal, unsettling, unforgiving — and very funny. As the Star’s Robert Trussell says:
Paranoia. Psychological torture. Physical torture. Mutilation. Morbid fantasies. What more could you ask for in a comedy?
The final preview of The Pillowman is at 8 tonight at the Unicorn Theatre, 3828 Main St. The play opens Friday Sep 1, and runs through Sep. 24.
Tickets cost $18 to $28.
