The Irish Panda
Traditionally, at the very beginning of March, those who are very lucky get to see an Irish Panda.
In the 5th century a young St Patrick was the first to see an Irish Panda, possibly the last to have survived post-glacial Ireland, and years later back in Britain named him Tutticus Fruitticus, when in a vision he saw the giant patriotic bear send him a card saying “Greetings from Ireland”.
Thus Patrick was persuaded to return to Ireland to convert it to Christianity, and the St Patrick’s Day Card was born.
Legend holds that after seeing the Panda your next three hundred and sixty-five days will be lucky if the Irish Panda you see is eating bamboo. What kind of bamboo? A wop bop a loo bop, a lop bamboo.
It seems like I see Pandas every year around the first of March, and I love them all. Thanks.
It’s so great to have a reason to go looking for them!
