The Big O by Declan Burke
A couple of days ago the Kansas City Star gave a very nice review to fellow Irish blogger Declan Burke.
As entertaining as Declan’s blog Crime Always Pays is (I link to it from American Hell - must add it to IrishKC), that wasn’t what the review was of.
Because Declan is a novelist. A crime writer. One invariably described as a love-child of such forbidden couples as Elmore Leonard and Oscar Wilde, or Quentin Tarantino and Buster Keaton.
And Leslie McGill writing for the Star likes The Big O by Burke:
Told primarily through rapid-fire, tight dialogue, the well-constructed book switches point of view among the various characters. The darkly funny result sounds more confusing in the description here than it plays out in the book. Part of the fun comes from realizing the relationships and the implications of those relationships a step or two ahead of the characters.
Burke’s style is evocative of Elmore Leonard, but with an Irish accent and more of a sense of humor.
Read the rest of Leslie’s review.
If you’re a blogger or blog reader, have a read of his site and interact with him; if you’re a novel reader, consider The Big O; and if you’re a reader of crime fiction, don’t hang around.
