Teapots by Kansas Artists
If my $99 Irish paintings are too cheap for you, then you might fancy a trip out to Manhattan, Kansas where about thirty artists have teapots in a show at the Strecker-Nelson Gallery.
Being an Irish stereotype I have several teapots on the go, all bar one bought at home in Ireland, the other one bought in China. The middle of America is not a great place for buying teapots.
And don’t get me started on trying to find decent tea-cosies.
Yes I know there are several places in KC that do sell teapots but before you buy one I strongly urge you to do a pour test. Whatever that pot does with water is exactly what it will do with tea - all over your kitchen until the day you take a hammer to it. More than one teapot in Kansas City has failed the pour test for me.
Since you’re spending in the region of $2,500 on the teapots at the Strecker-Nelson, I’m sure they won’t mind you asking for a pour test. You are going to make tea, aren’t you? You’re not just pretending, and collecting them?
Teapots are the lingua franca of ceramic art and allow the inventive potter to use the maximum number of elements—lid, spout, handle, body, and the possibility of feet. This similarity of parts actually emphasizes the individuality of the artist’s expression. Because of their common language, teapots are a challenge for ceramicists and a delight for collectors.
That reminds me of a friend at home urging me to go out with a woman I’d never met. Why would I? I asked, picturing scenes from Godzilla vs The Smog Monster.
-Big eyebrows, an infectious laugh, and the possibility of feet.
