Pitch: Best of Kansas City 2006
So I’m on the bus - you know I like the bus - reading the Pitch’s Best of Kansas City 2006 edition. Being narrow-minded and parochial I zone in on the Irish awards. There are no Irish people, places, sports, recreation, goods, services, food, arts, entertainment, or drink, that make the 2006 Best of KC issue. And no complaints from me.
Oh okay, Mike Mahoney is Best TV Reporter, and pushing it a bit, sports bar, albeit slightly soft-focus, Maloney’s in OP, is Best Neighborhood Bar, West. And pushing it even further, Kaleo Griffith gets Best Performance In A Play - the play being one by George Bernard Shaw.
Putting aside the marketing promotional aspect of these pseudo annual awards, the reason there might not be much Irish anything featured in the dozens of categories, is because despite the considerable crowds that attend the major Irish events in KC, in the ordinary day-to-day life of the city, there is not very much that is Irish to it at all. And that’s just fine.
Even Best Fish & Chips, which you might think some Irish establishment would have a good stab at, if only by association with England, goes to a non-Irish, and non-English for that matter, Microbrewey Pub, 75th Street Brewery. And deservedly so, according to my tastebuds.
It does however tell me that there is a gap in the market, however small, and that Irish KC can fill it. Expect the Best of Irish Kansas City awards in this space near you shortly.
Meanwhile the Pitch seems to have really missed a great chance to recognize many great blogs in the city, choosing a mere - if I’m counting right - three categories. Would the Pitch not be the obvious place to also award blogs on Music, Books, Art, Transportation, Movies, Parenting, Humour, Ethnic Life, Comics, Food, Advocacy, Urban Development, Religion, etc.? Here’s the three they did recognize:
• Best Republican Blog: …Just Cara
• Best Blog About Life: Frighteningly Uncommon Sense
• Best Sports Blog: Royals Review
Then again, maybe Tony every day recognizes Kansas City’s best blogs
