Parade in Parsons, KS Needs More Participants
Parsons is down in the south east corner of Kansas. It’s a beautiful part of the world, not as epic as western Kansas but a place I have a huge fondness for since cycling thereabouts on my cycle across America. (That’s where I left the Cycle Journal - I really do promise to post the rest).
Anyway, Jean Johnston honoured her father whose family came from Ireland, in 2000 by creating their St Patrick’s Day parade in Parsons, Kansas. Before then it would have been the big trip to Kansas City for the nearest parade.
Quoted in the Parsons Sun, Johnston is looking for more participants in the parade.
Johnston isn’t necessarily looking for big, fancy floats. She really is interested in having families get together, dress in green and ride through the parade in vehicles or just walk down Main Street. Of course, floats are welcome as well. Businesses also are encouraged to join, and all they need to do is put a simple sign on both sides of a vehicle. Johnston said a business entering the parade amounts to free advertising.
School groups also are encouraged to join but, and this is surely ironic, because it’s spring break it’s difficult to get marching bands or other school groups involved.
The Parsons, Kansas parade takes place on saturday March 15, 2008 at 2pm in downtown Parsons.
